At first, it seemed like a miracle.
Leilani had been told she would never have children. So when she became pregnant, she thought of Asher as her miracle baby.
But that first year quickly became a struggle.
Asher was severely underweight and experienced persistent acid reflux. The lack of nutrition caused hair loss. Asher also demonstrated significant delays in reaching critical milestones. At 18 months, he was neither walking nor talking.
Leilani sought help anywhere she could. Eventually, through recommendations from friends, she enrolled Asher at Caroline Mission, Unleashing Potential’s Early Childhood Education Center.
Caroline Mission’s on-site Occupational Therapist diagnosed Asher with an eating disorder and lactose intolerance. She began working with him to improve eating and speech. She also works with his family and educators on strategies to introduce foods and textures. Leilani reports that using sign language with food has been extremely helpful.
Today, Asher likes and is able to digest soy milk and Pediasure, which Caroline Mission has helped provide at no additional cost. This has helped him absorb nutrients and gain weight.
Our on-site Physical Therapist (PT) works with Asher on mobility and problem solving skills. Asher has flat feet that turn inwards. The PT stretches and helps straighten his feet to help with balance. The PT also monitors Asher’s weight gain, posture and muscle mass. Educators sit in on the physical therapy sessions so they can practice the skills with Asher throughout the day.
Evaluation at 6 months marks significant improvement. Leilani reports that therapy is a godsend and that she truly appreciates the Caroline Mission staff.
At Unleashing Potential, it’s not just about the children. Staff check in on the whole family and even send diapers home with her for her 3-month-old baby.
Caroline Mission is “very supportive,” Leilani said. “They are a support system outside of your family that will help you. They are genuine, caring, and want your children to succeed.”
With his second birthday approaching, Asher is walking and gaining weight. And, with the proper nutrients, his hair is growing back. Staff at Caroline Mission love his hair!
